The Mota-Engil Group is deeply saddened to announce that António Mota, the Group's long-standing leader who served as its chairman for more than 27 years, from 1995 to January 2023, passed away this morning in the city of Porto.
Today we bid farewell to an extraordinary man, a visionary entrepreneur who leaves behind a unique legacy, known for his humanistic spirit and solidarity with society, and the mark he left on everyone who knew him.
Today, Mota-Engil loses a remarkable figure in its history, to whom it owes much of what it is today: a multinational group, recognised for the quality of its engineering, and under management that is highly committed to each client and partner, where a word was enough to honour its commitments, in a leadership style largely based on values that he conveyed to everyone and which we must honour and continue to uphold.
A charismatic leader, visionary entrepreneur and man of enormous humanity, António Mota was a shining example of the ability to inspire teams, creating close and respectful relationships with the different generations he welcomed into the company, making each one feel like an integral part of the big family that is Mota-Engil.
His strategic vision, his lifelong dedication to the legacy he had received from his father, and his unwavering cohesion through the unconditional support of his sisters, as well as the ability and dedication of all of you, succeeded in transforming Mota-Engil into one of the largest Portuguese economic groups and a global benchmark in the engineering and construction sector.
Today is a day when we feel an enormous loss for the extraordinary person that António Mota was, is and will always be in each one of us, a rare combination of high standards and ever-present humanity.
The high standards that came from the ambition he always sought to convey as a manager of excellence, combined with his well-known dedication and sense of responsibility towards all of us, family and employees.
The humanity and spirit of solidarity he instilled contributed significantly to the culture and values we have today at Mota-Engil, which stem largely from the lessons that António Mota imparted to all of us every day in every country and project he visited.
As a leading figure in the Mota-Engil family, he liked to be treated as ‘The Elder’, a distinction he earned in Angola in his youth and which he exemplified today as the ever-present voice, with his experience and profound knowledge of what was best for the Group and for each one of us, and which, together, we must honour and carry on in the generations to come.
Finally, we would like to inform you that the funeral ceremonies will take place tomorrow, 1 December, with the wake at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of São Gonçalo, in Amarante, followed by a mass at 3:00 p.m. at the same location, from where the body will be taken to the family tomb in the Amarante cemetery.
The Management of the Mota-Engil Group, as well as its more than 52,000 employees, join together at this time to convey their most sincere condolences to the Mota family.
