The "+ Valor" Program is the Program of Selective Collection of Organic Matter in restaurants, canteens, markets and hotels. The Program covers selected establishments in the municipalities of Amadora, Lisboa, Loures and Odivelas.

The program has a unique brand image and a goal common to all partners: to collect high quality organic matter to be valued at the Valorsul Organic Treatment and Valuation Station.

Adhering plants are required to separate the organic matter they produce and place it in a specific container. In making this gesture, the establishment is contributing to the development of an innovative project in Portugal, making a valuable contribution to the improvement of the Environment.

As a form of support to selected establishments, the Program provides for the provision of containers, daily pick-ups from Monday to Saturday as well as the delivery of information materials. There is also a dedicated telephone contact for each area for more information or requests.

The Organic Waste Cycle

The Organic Waste Cycle

In this diagram are represented the phases through which the organic waste recovered under the "+Valor" Program. Let's take a closer look at each stage of the organic waste life cycle:

During the preparation of meals and after consumption of food we all produce organic waste. In the intervention area of Valorsul about 36% of domestic waste produced is organic. Much of this waste, if properly separated, has a great potential for recovery and becomes a raw material.

In the "+ Valor" Program, we ask the major producers of organic waste, namely restaurants, canteens, markets and hotels, to separate them in the brown or green container with a brown lid. The process of recovery of this waste requires that the organic matter received has a high level of quality. It is therefore so important to follow the rules of separation correctly.

The collection services are provided by the Municipalities. The collections are carried out from Monday to Saturday at the times determined by the collecting entity. The process of storing containers and collection must always comply with municipal regulations.

Organic Treatment and Valorization Station (ETVO)

The destination of the organic matter collected is ETVO, installed in São Brás, Amadora County. It is the first facility in Portugal to use the "Anaerobic Digestion" technology (treatment in closed environment and absence of oxygen) associated to "Composting" and that generates electricity from the biogas produced. In addition to this energy, which will be exported to the National Electric Grid as "green energy", a high quality "compost" is also produced for use in agriculture.

From the organic matter a high quality compound is produced without chemical additives.

Agricultural production

The use of the "compound" produced is especially recommended to correct the acidity of agricultural soils (there are many in Portugal), to stabilize poor soils and prepare them for agricultural crops and then chemical fertilizers, if appropriate. Good applications of this product are known as organic broker of land for the planting and exploitation of vineyards. It also has interesting applications in certain practices of gardening and treatment of green spaces.

Adhesion to the Program +Valor

Adhesion to the Program +Valor

Can you join the Program if you want?
Membership is not automatic, it is not enough to want to join. It is necessary that this adhesion be previously analyzed and authorized.

It's because?
Because it is necessary to ensure that the operating conditions are met to provide a good quality service. It is essential to ensure that: • sufficient and quality organic matter is produced;

  • sufficient and quality organic matter is produced;
  • conditions in the establishment for the daily packaging of organic matter;
  • adequate and sufficient deposition equipment;
  • possibility of integration into a collection circuit.

How should I proceed to propose my establishment's membership?
You should send an e-mail to the collecting entity in your area, indicating the entity, address, parish and contact telephone number and requesting to join the Program.
If you are a Large Urban Solid Waste Producer and have your own collection, please contact Valorsul directly.
Know the contacts of each entity.

Waste separation rules

Waste separation rules

The quality of compost for agriculture depends to a large extent on the correct separation of organic waste deposited by producers. Thus, it is fundamental to respect the rules of separation by depositing the organic waste in the containers themselves and never mixing other types of waste that can contaminate them.
To properly separate organic waste, you should follow the following rules.
