In the region of Lisbon

The collection of waste in the North Lisbon region is the responsibility of the municipalities of Amadora, Lisbon, Loures, Odivelas and Vila Franca de Xira.

Except for the following exceptions:

  • the waste of companies, when they exceed 1,100 liters, are transported by the own or by carrier that contracted;
  • private wastes (other than household waste) are transported by themselves or through the carrier they have contracted. Eg waste from a home move.

In the West region

Waste collection in the western region is the responsibility of the municipalities of Alcobaça, Alenquer, Arruda dos Vinhos, Azambuja, Bombarral, Cadaval, Caldas da Rainha, Lourinhã, Nazaré, Óbidos, Peniche, Rio Maior, Sobral de Monte Agraço and Torres Vedras.

Except for the following exceptions:

  • the waste of companies, when they exceed 1,100 liters, are transported by the own or by carrier that contracted;
  • private wastes (other than household waste) are transported by themselves or through the carrier they have contracted. Eg waste from a home move;
  • the multimaterial selective collection of the west, ie the recyclable waste found in the ecopoints, is carried out by Valorsul.

Promotion of Selective Collection

Valorsul promotes the selective collection of materials and the way of organizing this collection depends on the geographical area.

In Amadora, Lisbon, Loures, Odivelas and Vila Franca de Xira, the selective collection is carried out by municipal entities. Valorsul financed these municipalities in the acquisition of disposal and selective collection equipment (namely containers and vehicles). Given the population density, approximately 80% of the selectively collected residues in the Valorsul universe are delivered in these municipalities.

Valorsul carries out a multimaterial collection of recyclable materials in the remaining 14 municipalities of the system. The materials from the ecopoints of the western zone (and the ecological islands in the municipality of Óbidos) are collected in addition to the materials delivered at the ecocentros existing at the transfer stations. The municipalities in this area, however, also carry out selective collection activities more geared to trade and to areas that, due to their characteristics, do not allow the placement of ecopoints. About 78% of the recyclables collected by Valorsul in this area.

The following indicators of ecopoint coverage were verified in 2014:
