The Mato da Cruz Sanitary Landfill is a facility for the MSW deposition. It is constituted by cells lined with impervious materials to prevent the liquids released by the waste - the leached materials- to infiltrate and pollute the subsoil.
In the Landfill, there is also a biogas extraction and burning network - the gas released by the residues after being deposited. After a short while, this biogas will be used to produce electrical power.
Thus, the municipal solid waste is deposited in a controlled way, avoiding environmental and public health problems.
