Support to Municipal Projects

Supporting program to the selective collection of recyclable materials

Between 1998 and 2000, Valorsul financed the municipalities in its area of intervention in the acquisition of depot and selective collection equipment (namely containers and vehicles) in order to achieve the selective collection objectives forecast in the PORGIRSU - MSW Integrated Management Operational Plan of Lisbon Metropolitan Area (North).
The selective collection, in Valorsul's intervention area of the municipalities in general, is a practice that started in the beginning of the 90's. The support given within that scope allowed the municipalities to reinforce their containers' networks and vehicle fleets and in some cases, the beginning of new materials collection, as was the case of the packages flow or the realisation of collection through other schemes, namely with the expansion of the door-to-door collection provided to a larger number of inhabitants in Loures council. On the other hand, besides the equipment reinforcement, this support also allowed the renovation of some of that equipment.

Within the previous financing scope, rendered available to the municipalities by Valorsul and due to some posterior acquisition efforts done it was possible to reach the following eco-points coverage indicators:

- 494 inhabitants/per eco-point;

- the average distance among eco-points is 282 m,

which corresponds to values within the standards of the most developed European countries in this field.

However, and despite the coverage rates presented, the quantity of materials selectively collected shows a lower growing rate than foreseen.

Within this context, Valorsul is implementing a new municipal support project that aims to complement and requalify the existing deposition and transport capacities, as well as to invest in new equipment and in deposition schemes that increase both the quantity and the quality of the materials collected.
